A moment

his gaze fell across the barrier.
across the shimmering blockade
across insurmountable obstacles ripe with death and injury
across disparaging odds to where she resided. their eyes locked -a moment. she stretched out, leaning as far as her perch would allow; closer only by inches, alleviating their pain -their desire to be closer- to defeat their distance. yet for every inch closer that illuminated their love, served a painful reminder of their separation.
his eyes lingered a moment longer before dropping away- shame- in surveying that accursed gap.

Their blockade was ever changing.
many a late hour of fading light was spent -lost- aching at the edge of oblivion. star lit serenades and whispered words shouted across the wind. countless.
his keen eyes tracked paths. safe rotes in the ever changing maze of perils; the simple 10 meters between them constantly altered, shifting in a second or seemingly amiably meandering only to turn and pounce on the hapless.

the dangers of the this no-man's-land were lost to him. his self preservation learnt him gross knowledge of the grousum effects of the long trench. perhaps if one was quick enough, fleet and vigilant enough...
across certain doom she whimpered. fearing his heroic demise yet longing of success.

His gaze fell across the barrier.
across the road, to his squirrelly companion;
across time their day would come.
but not today, not this eve.

they flicked their tails and waited
loved and waited.
